Quick Takes Friday

My post earlier this week about one of my favorite films,"Arranged", which tells the story of a friendship between a Muslim and a Jewish woman, inspired me to start reading Answering Islam: The Crescent in Light of the Cross by Norman Geisler and Abdul Saleed. I wanted to learn more about Islam (did you know that 1 in 5 people on earth are Muslim?) and so far it's great.

Speaking of books, I just finished Why I Stayed by Gayle Haggard. Gayle is the wife of the former pastor Ted Haggard,  whose scandalous affairs and drug use rocked their church community and their marriage. The book was mediocre; I expected the emphasis of the book to be on why and how she decided to make her marriage work, but the real emphasis was on the long (and tedious) process of her husband's removal from the church he pastored.

I was reminiscing the other day about my first days using the Internet and it got me thinking: whatever happened to chat rooms? I have fond memories of cruising the AOL chat rooms as a teenager. I met a dear and long time friend and pen pal from England in one of those chat rooms, but I  shudder at the thought of my daughter meeting people online. I guess those were more innocent times?

I know people with older children and teenagers comment on how much they miss their children being babies, and it's not that I don't appreciate my daughter, but I do look forward to a time when she will be able to hold a conversation with me. When my husband has to work late, I sometimes go a good two to three days without sustained, adult conversation.

Have you ever seen "The Office"? Although definitely not for children,  it's a lot cleaner than it's British counterpart and it's one of the most hilarious shows I have ever seen. Here are some words of wisdom from Dwight, one of the main characters:
Halloween wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The kids stopped coming after we turned the lights out and there was enough candy left over for us to eat. I call that success!

My daughter let me sleep in today for the first time in a very long time. It looks like it's going to be a great weekend!
